#1 Driving in Mexico Mistake

Not Buying MEXICAN Auto Insurance

All vehicles must carry Mexican civil liability insurance to be able to legally drive within Mexico.

Most people know that they must carry automobile insurance in Mexico, but few know that your auto insurance must be with a Mexican company.  I'll repeat this because it is so important.

You must get your automobile insurance from a MEXICAN company  when driving in Mexico!!

Sorry to shout, but this is the number one mistake foreigners make when they come down to Mexico and drive and I would hate for you to be one of them.

Many U.S. policies state that they provide coverage in Mexico, but even though they may provide some collision coverage, they cannot provide the legal civil liability coverage because they are not a Mexican company.

The good news is that Mexican auto insurance premiums are generally much cheaper than insurance premiums in the United States.

Obviously, the type of vehicle you drive will make a difference in the price, as well as the quality of the insurance, but to give you an idea; a decent yearly insurance policy on a four-door sedan runs about $350 USD.

Usually, you are given a discount for buying longer-term insurance such as for the entire year versus only 6 months.

If you don’t have enough civil liability insurance or are unable to pay for the damages you cause with your vehicle, the police may throw you in jail until you are able to come up with the money.
